Pricing depends on the crane size, operator time, travel distance, site access, lift complexity, and how long the crane is needed. Lighter boom truck work and larger 40-100 ton hydraulic truck crane jobs are quoted differently, so we build every quote around the actual lift instead of giving you a generic rate card. We provide free, no-obligation estimates with the details spelled out clearly.
What's included in the rental price?
+
831 Crane Rentals provides the operated crane service itself, which means the crane and an NCCCO-certified operator are included in the quoted work. Depending on the project, the quote may also account for mobilization, setup, and basic lift planning. Permits, rigging requirements, traffic control, or special engineering needs are handled case by case and called out upfront.
Do you charge for travel time?
+
For jobs in our core service area across the Central Coast, Bay Area, and San Benito County, mobilization is usually built into the quote. Larger jobs farther from Watsonville or jobs that require special transport and planning may carry an additional mobilization line item. Either way, we quote that before the work starts so there are no surprises.
Equipment & Selection
What size crane do I need?
+
The right crane depends on the weight of the load, required height, setup radius, ground conditions, and site access. A lighter rooftop unit or sign installation may be a boom truck job, while structural steel, precast, or larger mechanical placements may call for a 40-100 ton hydraulic truck crane or a heavier engineered solution. Describe the lift and we'll recommend the most practical option.
What types of cranes do you offer?
+
Our core fleet focus is operated hydraulic truck cranes and boom trucks for 20-100+ ton work. For the right project, we also coordinate larger heavy-lift crane solutions when the scope calls for 100+ ton capacity and engineered lift planning. The goal is not to oversell equipment categories — it's to match the crane to the lift.
What's the difference between a boom truck and a hydraulic truck crane?
+
A boom truck is ideal for lighter, faster-moving work because it drives directly to the site and sets up quickly. A hydraulic truck crane brings more lifting capacity, more boom, and better performance for larger commercial or industrial picks. We look at the weight, radius, and site access first, then recommend whichever option handles the lift safely and efficiently.
Scheduling & Logistics
How far in advance should I schedule a crane?
+
For standard lifts, one to two weeks of notice is ideal. During busy construction periods, more lead time helps lock in your preferred date. We also provide same-day quotes and can often respond quickly to urgent scheduling needs when equipment and crew availability line up. The earlier we see the job details, the smoother the lift plan usually is.
What areas do you serve?
+
We're based in Watsonville and regularly serve the Central Coast, Bay Area, and San Benito County, including Santa Cruz County, Monterey County, Hollister, San Juan Bautista, Gilroy, Morgan Hill, and San Jose. For larger jobs, we're available statewide. Same-day quotes are available throughout the greater Monterey Bay area.
Do I need permits for crane operation?
+
It depends on the job location and whether the crane affects public streets, sidewalks, utilities, or protected airspace. Some cities and counties have their own requirements, especially for traffic control or work in dense urban areas. We help identify the likely permit needs early so the job can be planned correctly.
Insurance & Equipment
Is the rental equipment insured?
+
Yes. 831 Crane Rentals carries general liability coverage and can provide insurance documentation when your project requires it. If your GC or site owner needs a certificate of insurance, we can coordinate that as part of the job setup.
What condition is the equipment in?
+
Every crane is inspected and maintained with a focus on reliability, safety, and job readiness. Preventative maintenance and pre-job checks are part of how we operate because downtime on site is expensive for everyone involved.
Is an operator included?
+
Yes. Our operated crane service includes an NCCCO-certified operator, which helps keep the lift safe, compliant, and efficient. If the job requires additional rigging support or engineered planning, we'll outline that in the quote as well.
